Orange County Chapter--Status Report 2008

ORGANIZATION

  1. The chapter was accepted as a probationary chapter during the last quarter of the status reporting period.
  2. Our currently active members and their status are as follows:
  • Bill McCarty, director and full member
  • Eddie Olson, full member
  • Patrick McCarty, advisory member

Matthew Bates has been out of contact and is no longer officially considered an active member

    DEPLOYMENTS
  1. At the time of this report, no honeynet is deployed.
  2. During the reporting period, we deployed a non-Internet-facing Honyenet of a university LAN segment and a WiFi honeynet.
  3. No reportable events were detected during the deployment periods.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

  1. We are exploring the possbility of using Google's newly enhanced language translation facility, which now supports the Romanian language, as the basis of an enhanced IRC log processor.
  2. We have begun study of security issues related to virtual environments, such as Linden Lab's SecondLife.
  3. We are interested in admitting additional members to the chapter.

FINDINGS

  1. Because the chapter was recently formed and admitted on probationary status, no specific findings pertain to the reporting period.

PAPERS AND PRESENTATIONS

  1. Honeynet technology and the Honeynet Project were explained to students in Biola University's CSCI 104 Nature of Computing course during the Fall 2008 term.

GOALS

  1. The key goal for the chapter in the upcoming period is to identify potentially relevant areas in which to contribute to the Project's activities and intiate work toward achieving one or more related goals.
